Perhaps you knew it as Newcastle Island, but this historical island off the coast of Departure Bay is changing it's name back to Saysutshun.

This look to the past is a historic step forward as the B.C. Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy announced the change in 2021 to reflect the area’s Snuneymuxw First Nation heritage.

Saysutshun History & Name Change

Saysutshun was part of coal mining and stone quarrying operations from the mid 19th century to the mid 20th century, but before then it was enjoyed for its connection to nature.

Part of the Snuneymuxw First Nation Traditional Territory, they called the island Saysutshun — which means “training for running” — due to its place as a training ground for warriors.

Now, a look around Saysutshun wouldn’t reveal anything drastically different. Hikers, bikers and runners still use this small island to get some exercise and enjoy the natural beauty and incredible scenery afforded here.
