The community of Youbou on Lake Cowichan is a big hit for those who know about it for its close connection to nature and the many things to do throughout the region.

Despite being one of the largest freshwater lakes on the island, Lake Cowichan is one of the region's best kept secrets, with the entire population of Youbou being only around 1,000 people.

To celebrate the many things to do in the area, we’ve come up with a list of 4 of the best outdoor activities in the Lake Cowichan area.

1. Houseboating on Lake Cowichan

There’s no better way to take in the natural beauty of the surrounding area than spending a few days directly in the middle of it.

There’s nothing more peaceful and refreshing than waking up in the morning surrounded by water and trees on every side – this picturesque scenery makes a perfect environment for jumping into the fresh waters of Lake Cowichan before your morning coffee.

Lake Cowichan offers some of the finest houseboats around, with plenty of luxury amenities such as hot tubs, large and spacious private bedrooms containing queen beds and more.

2. Hiking Trails Near Youbou

Youbou is known for its connection to nature, and there's no better way to experience the rich flora and fauna of the area at no cost while stretching your legs than to take a hike on one of the many trails in the area.

Of all the nearby trails, Cowichan Valley Trail is one of the finest, highlighted by the impressive Kinsol Trestle Bridge, an extraordinary trestle bridge that crosses the Koksilah River.

This landmark was built back in 1920 and stands as one of the tallest trestle bridges in the world at over 140 feet high.

3. Driving Laps At The Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit

Just twenty minutes down Cowichan Valley Highway, the Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit is Canada’s only year round motorsport circuit with a 19 turn course that’s over two kilometers long.

This impressive facility is open to the public for a casual day at the races, or get active and go for some of the programs offered, such as driver training for amateur drivers or more advanced programs for those looking to hone their skills.

4. Tubing Down Cowichan River

Just minutes south of Youbou Road is a perfect spot to begin your journey down one of the most idyllic and picturesque rivers in the country.

Experience the relaxing slow parts of the river as well as the thrilling rapids, all while cooling off from the heat with your feet dipped in the cool waters of the Cowichan River.

And after your perfect day on the river, just hop on one of the shuttles that come on a regular schedule to take you back to your vehicle.

With summer coming up, now’s the time to start planning your next few months to get the most out of the beautiful Youbou weather.
