Westwood Lake
Westwood Lake is one of Nanaimo's best loved parks—and for a good reason! It's a fantastic area for the whole family. Nearby residents and those from afar enjoy its walking and running trails , especially the gorgeous 5.5km trail around the lake. Keep in mind that although dogs are allowed, they must be leashed at all times.
The main beach area is lifeguard-patrolled from June to August, and is a popular destination on warmer days. Parents will love the paved parking lot and the facilities on site, and the kids won't be able to get enough of the playground (and some of us big kids won't either!).

The neighbourhood of College Heights is located close to Buttertubs Marsh, Colliery Dams, Morrell Sanctuary, Westwood Lake, and Westwood Ridge. In particular, Colliery Dam Park is considered by locals to be a wonderful destination to walk your dog (with both on-leash and off-leash areas) and offers steep trails for an awesome workout! There are additional parks and green spaces nearby, as well as a skatepark.
The neighbourhood itself backs onto the expansive forest preserve on the south side, and there's a multitude of trails to explore. There is also a community playground for the kids, called Cariboo Park. Other nearby highlights include the Nanaimo Ice Centre and Nanaimo Aquatic Centre, both of which are just opposite the highway. As well, the Vancouver Island University campus is just across the street, which features a theater, a gallery, a museum, gardens, and so much more.
