Proportionally, single-family homes take up a good percentage of the Uplands real estate market, though there are also a number of multi-family homes (specifically condos and duplexes) for interested buyers. As a result, this neighbourhood offers quite a diverse selection of properties at a range of price points.
A few retirement condominium developments can also be found along Long Lake, including Thornbridge at Longwood, Lakeside Gardens, and Longlake Chateau. The neighbourhood of Uplands centers on Uplands Road, which is a major street that winds north up to Dover and connects to the area of Departure Bay. It is about a 15 to 20-minute drive to downtown Nanaimo, which makes a commute doable for those who might require daily drives to work. However, one of the major highlights of living in Uplands is the nearby amenities. There are two large commercial areas close to the neighbourhood: the Country Club Centre in the south end (with a grocery store, fast food restaurants, a gym, and more) and the Nanaimo North Town Centre in the north end (which features a movie theater, another grocery store, more options for dining, and two major home improvement stores).
Outside of shopping and dining, Uplands also has several parks and green spaces. The largest is Loudoun Park and Lakeview Park, both of which are on Long Lake. As well, there are a few playgrounds and smaller parks for resident use. Beyond the boundaries of the neighbourhood, Linley Valley Cottle Lake Park is located close bay and is a favourite of Nanaimo residents for its walking trails and its two small lakes. Long Lake is also home to the Nanaimo Rowing Club.
